Christmas is coming!

As it is already a tradition in my English classes, there is no Christmas without adverts,
so let’s watch five of the cutest ads 2019 in Great Britain. Of course,
my favourite and one of the most expected  is John Lewis’ ad.
What do you think?

ADVERT 1: ASDA
Warmer:
What do you most like about Christmas?
What do you do for others at Christmas?

While watching
Watch the video until 0:22: what is she going to use her grandad’s walking stick for?Watch the video until 0:55: what are they going to do with the magic?

After watching:
Which Christmas superpower would you like to have?If you could do anything for anyone at Christmas, what would it be?

Click here if you want to know more about this advert

ADVERT 2: WALKERS

Warmer:

Do you know Maria Carey? Do you know any of her songs?

She is going to advertise a product. What product will it be?
While watching:
Watch until 0:42. Who is going to get the bag of crisps? Why do you think so? How will they get it? Watch to find out.
After watching:In the video, Maria Carey says:  I love Christmas, It’s a magical time,

A time for GIVING
A time for CARING
A time for SHARING
-- Add as many lines starting with ‘A time for…’ as you can.
--  Is there anything you would not be prepared to share with anyone else? Why?

ADVERT 3: JOHN LEWIS
My favourite every year!!

The short-film was made in Hungary during the summer - in 30 degree heat - so all the winter scenes had to be created by large amounts of biodegradable fake snow and CGI.
Ten-year-old Scot Ruby had to practise her reactions with another actor as the lovable dragon was computer generated, but the schoolgirl worked perfectly to capture each emotion.

Click here for the Making of, if you liked it-

ADVERT 4:  ARGOS

While watching:Order the following scenes:
  1. Fireworks go off and the crowd go wild for the two drummers
  2. The television turns itself on to show a music video
  3. The dad and the daughter have a drum duel
  4. He sees a child’s drum kit
  5. The oven transforms into lights
  6. There is a man sitting at a table looking through a catalogue
  7. The cupboards transform into speakers
  8. The kitchen opens to reveal a crowd
  9. The table opens up to reveal the drum kit
  10. The fridge opens to make a smoke machine
  11. She slides down the bannister
  12. A little girl walks down the stairs an sees a drumkit for herself
  13. A teddy bear goes crowd surfing

(Correct order: 6, 4, 9, 5, 2, 7, 10, 12, 11, 3, 8, 13, 1)

ADVERT 5: ALDI

Warmer:What do you normally eat on Christmas Day?

Ok, I hope you liked them , and if you feel like watching more here´s the link to

Black Friday: Breathe, take a break – the planet can’t handle it anymore

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are expected to generate billions of dollars in sales for clothing and other products this year. But this shopping bonanza also generates greater volumes of waste than ever. That is bad news for the environment.

Black Friday: Origins

Wondering how Black Friday got its name? You're probably not the only one.
Each year the famous sales weekend, which follows Thanksgiving Day and begins tomorrow - November 29 - this year, sees a significant amount of shoppers head to high street stores and online brands in attempt to find the best deals
Ahead of Black Friday 2019, several retailers including AmazonCurrys PC WorldJohn Lewis and Argos have already launched a range of early offers.
Yet, many people are unaware of the phenomenon's history.  Here is the story behind Black Friday.

The early origins and history

The term "Black Friday" was actually first associated with financial crisis, not sales shopping.
Two Wall Street financiers Jim Fisk and Jay Gould, together bought a significant amount of US gold in the hope of  being able to sell it for huge profits.
On Friday, September 24 1869, in what became referred to as "Black Friday", the US gold market crashed and Fisk and Gould's actions left Wall Street barons bankrupt.
Black Friday tales
When shops in the US recorded their accounting details by hand, they noted profits in black and losses in red.
It is thought that many shops were "in the red" throughout most of the year but they later "went into the black" the day after Thanksgiving, when shoppers bought a significant amount of discounted merchandise.

Who coined the name Black Friday?

Police officers in Philadelphia were first to link Black Friday to the post-Thanksgiving period in the 1950s. Large crowds of tourists and shoppers came to the city the day after Thanksgiving for the Army-Navy football game, creating chaos, traffic jams and shoplifting opportunities.
Police officers in the city weren't able to take the day off work and instead had to work long shifts to control the carnage, thus using the term "Black Friday" to refer to it.
Today, Black Friday is the USA's biggest shopping event of the year, when many shops cut their prices on a range of products, in order to boost profits and officially kick off the festive season.
Although some retailers such as Ikea and Marks and Spencer chose not to join the shopping craze, many retailers have successfully boosted their profits by participating.

Now, there are two other  important dates around Thanksgiving, Cybermonday and Givingtuesday. What do you know about them?

Mr Bean´s Daily Routine -- 1º ESO

If you had an extra day in the week ... what could you do?

SPEAKING: 2nd Type Conditionals
Film English Lesson Plan
  • In pairs, ask five questions about your partner’s daily life:  age, job, studies, journey to school, routine and evening pastimes, for example.
  •  Say to each other what you do on a normal day.
  •  Look at this question:
"If you had an extra day in the week, what could you do?"
  • Write down five things you think your partner would do if he/she had an extra day in the week.
  • When you have finished writing your sentences,  read them to your partner, for example:
“If you had an extra day, I think you’d spend more time with your grandparents.”
  • Your partner should say whether the sentence is right or not.

Now, you  are going to watch a short film called Everyday in which a young couple imagine they had an extra day.

LEARNING WITH SONGS

Reported Speech with Jonas Brothers
`Sucker´

Listen to this song and pause the video to report what the
Jonas Brothers say ... to their wives? Or try reporting the underlined
sentences from the lyrics below.

"Sucker"

We go together
Better than birds of a feather, you and me
We change the weather, yeah
I'm feeling heat in December when you're 'round me

I've been dancing on top of cars
And stumbling out of bars
I follow you through the dark
Can't get enough
You're the medicine and the pain
The tattoo inside my brain
And baby, you know it's obvious

I'm a sucker for you
Say the word and I'll go anywhere blindly
I'm a sucker for you, yeah
Any road you take you know that you'll find me

I'm a sucker for all the subliminal things
No one knows about you (About you)
About you (About you)
And you're making the typical me
Break my typical rules
It's true, I'm a sucker for you

Yeah
Don't complicate it, yeah
'Cause I know you and you know everything about me
I can't remember
All of the nights I don't remember when you're 'round me

I've been dancing on top of cars
And stumbling out of bars
I follow you through the dark
Can't get enough
You're the medicine and the pain
The tattoo inside my brain
And baby, you know it's obvious

I'm a sucker for you
Say the word and I'll go anywhere blindly
I'm a sucker for you, ooh yeah
Any road you take you know that you'll find me

I'm a sucker for all the subliminal things
No one knows about you (About you)
About you (About you)
And you're making the typical me
Break my typical rules
It's true, I'm a sucker for you

Yeah
(I'm a sucker for you)

I've been dancing on top of cars
And stumbling out of bars
I follow you through the dark
Can't get enough
You're the medicine and the pain
The tattoo inside my brain
And baby, you know it's obvious

I'm a sucker for you
Say the word and I'll go anywhere blindly
I'm a sucker for you, ooh yeah
Any road you take you know that you'll find me

I'm a sucker for all the subliminal things
No one knows about you (About you)
About you (About you)
And you're making the typical me
Break my typical rules
It's true, I'm a sucker for you

BLEND WORDS

English is a dynamic language that is constantly evolving. Many of the words in the English language are derived from ancient Latin and Greek or from other European languages such as German or French. But starting in the 20th century, blended words began to emerge to describe new technologies or cultural phenomena. For instance, as dining out became more popular, many restaurants began serving a new weekend meal in the late morning. It was too late for breakfast and too early for lunch, so someone decided to make a new word that described a meal that was a little bit of both. Thus, "brunch" was born.

As new inventions changed the way people lived and worked, the practice of combining parts of words to make new ones became popular. In the 1920s, as traveling by car became more common, a new kind of hotel that catered to drivers emerged. These "motor hotels" quickly proliferated and became known as "motels." In 1994, when a rail tunnel beneath the English Channel opened, connecting France and Great Britain, it quickly became known as the "Chunnel," a word blend of "Channel" and "tunnel."

FridaysForFuture

What is Fridays For Future?

#FridaysforFuture is a peoples movement following the call from @GretaThunberg to school strike.

Why are kids striking?

School children are required to attend school. But with the worsening Climate Destruction, this goal of going to school begins to be pointless.
- Why study for a future, which may not be there?
- Why spend a lot of effort to become educated, when our governments are not listened by the educated?

How / When / Where to strike?

Greta requests that people strike in front of their closest town hall, every Friday. With a sign, take a picture and post it with the hashtags:
#Fridaysforfuture
#Climatestrike

Who is Greta Thunberg?

Greta Thunberg is a 16-year-old Swedish climate activist.

In August 2018, Greta Thunberg started a school strike for the climate outside the Swedish Parliament that has since spread all over the world and now involves over 100,000 schoolchildren. The movement is now called Fridays For Future.

Thunberg has spoken at climate rallies in Stockholm, Helsinki, Brussels and London. In December she attended the United Nations COP24 in Katowice, Poland, where she addressed the Secretary-General and made a plenary speech that went viral and was shared many million times around the globe. In January 2019 she was invited to the World Economic Forum in Davos where her speeches again made a worldwide impact.

Thunberg tries to live a low-carbon life. Therefore she is vegan, and she doesn't fly. She has been named as one of the worlds most influential teens by TIME magazine.

Watch her speech at the UN Conference
